About Tongue Cancer

Why a sore on the tongue should not be ignored.

Cancer of the tongue often begins as a patch, ulcer, or thickened area that does not heal, most commonly on the side of the tongue. Pain, bleeding, or a change in speech may come later. Any sore that lasts more than two weeks deserves examination.

Treatment depends on the size and depth of the tumour. A small tumour may need only a limited operation; a larger one may need part of the tongue to be rebuilt so that speech and swallowing are preserved as far as possible. Speech and swallowing therapy is often part of recovery.
