About Maxillary Cancer

Cancer of the upper jaw.

The maxilla forms the upper jaw, the roof of the mouth, and the floor of the nose and eye socket. Cancer here may first appear as a non-healing ulcer on the upper gum or palate, loose upper teeth, a blocked nose on one side, or swelling of the cheek.

Surgery may remove part of the upper jaw. The gap this leaves between the mouth and nose is then closed — with a reconstructive flap or a custom-made plate called an obturator — so that eating and speech can return.
