About Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Fracture
The condyle is the part of the lower jaw that sits in the joint just in front of the ear. It often breaks after a fall or a blow to the chin, sometimes on both sides. Pain in front of the ear, a bite that meets early on one side, or a jaw that shifts when opening are typical signs.
Depending on the fracture, treatment may be a period of guided jaw exercises with elastic bands, or an operation to fix the bone with small plates. Regaining normal mouth opening through regular exercises is an important part of recovery.
