About Head & Neck Space Infection Management
Infections that spread into the neck.
Infection from a tooth, the gums, or the tonsils can spread into the spaces between the muscles of the face and neck. Rapidly increasing swelling under the jaw, fever, difficulty opening the mouth, and trouble swallowing are warning signs.
Treatment usually combines antibiotics given in hospital, draining the collection of pus, and removing the source — often an infected tooth. Difficulty breathing or being unable to swallow saliva is an emergency: go straight to the nearest hospital.
