About Mandible Cancer

Cancer of the lower jaw.

The mandible holds the lower teeth and shapes the chin and jaw line. Cancer can reach it from the gum, the floor of the mouth, or the tongue. Signs include loosening teeth, a socket that does not heal after an extraction, swelling, or numbness of the lower lip.

Depending on how deeply the bone is involved, surgery may remove only the upper rim of the jaw or a full segment. When a segment is removed, the jaw is usually rebuilt with bone transferred from elsewhere, supporting the jaw line, chewing, and later dental rehabilitation.
