About Palate Cancer

Cancer of the roof of the mouth.

The hard palate is the bony front part of the roof of the mouth; the soft palate is the muscular part at the back. Cancer here may show as an ulcer, a raised area, or a patch, and is sometimes first noticed by a dentist or when a denture stops fitting.

Treatment aims to remove the disease while keeping the mouth separate from the nose. The palate may be closed with a reconstructive flap or a removable obturator, and speech and swallowing are reviewed during recovery.
